Abstract/Summary:
A three-dimensional, laminar and turbulent flow analyses were performed, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to investigate flow through Bileaflet Artificial Heart Valve. The ejection (Forward) phase was analyzed under steady and transient flow conditions. The backflow phase was analyzed under steady flow conditions. Results showed a reasonable agreement with previous experimental and numerical results. The backflow phase observed to exhibit the worst flow conditions. Shear stress found in the backflow analysis was higher than a shear stress that caused hemolysis in experimental analysis. The shear stress found in the forward phase, could damage the aorta endothelial lining, and enhance formation of thrombosis. The flow observed to exhibit a strong secondary flow, which could be considered as a potential thrombosis.
