Abstract/Summary:
Over the past several years, Mississippi has consistently been one of the leaders in fatal crashes and fatal crash rates in the United States. The major underlying cause to this fact is believed to be the abundance of two-lane rural roads in our state. The Department of Civil Engineering at Mississippi State University, in conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), conducted a fatal crash study in which a causal analysis was performed, followed by the identification of possible countermeasures, which would decrease the number of fatal crashes in the state of Mississippi. The research consisted of a literature review designed to derive various causal chain study methodologies and also to develop countermeasures for the significant crash types. The research also consisted of on-site crash investigations in which site-specific information was developed.
