Abstract/Summary:
Since reforms beginning in 1978, China has experienced rapid economic development. Concurrently, environmental degradation has increased. Research is scare on the actual water management practices of medium sized rural industries, one of the documented, high polluting sectors.; This thesis is an investigation of the impact of water pollution on industrial expansion in Yuhang, Zhejiang. Specifically, it considers the water use practices adopted by three industrial sectors with a focus on Cleaner Production techniques. Through synthesis of the knowledge and perceptions of government and industry officials, observation of practices and secondary data the factors affecting change are analyzed. Influencing factors are common: access to knowledge and training, technology, capital and government enforcement of regulations. High levels of water pollution do not seem to be constraining industrial practices in Yuhang County, yet CP practices were observed. The economic benefits of increased efficiency appear to be most influential when choosing water management practices.
