Abstract/Summary:
This thesis proposes the design of concrete deep beams with openings using a direct design method. There are currently no major design codes that describe the design of concrete deep beams with openings. Twelve concrete deep beams with and without openings were designed using a direct design approach. The beams were then tested to validate the effectiveness of the design method. Also, three selected beams were repaired using carbon fiber laminates and retested for its ultimate load capacity.; This study finds that the proposed method of design is safe, with all the beams meeting their design strengths and having an average ultimate load of 60% greater than the average design load. The repair of deep beams with openings using carbon fiber laminates is effective, repairing each of the three beams to meet their design loads.
