Abstract/Summary:
imulation of air filtration through fibrous media has been studied. The simulation technique employs the Monte Carlo method, which is based on statistical sampling. Simulation results have been compared with experimental data and good agreement has been obtained.;A multi-layer porous media model, based on pore size distribution measured by capillary flow porometer, was used to represent fibrous media. The air filtration model took into account the filtration mechanisms of diffusion, direct interception and inertial impact. The concept of effective particle diameter was introduced to incorporate the filtration mechanisms. Particle rebound and re-entrainment phenomena also have been considered in the simulation.;The simulation results show that particle re-entrainment may not be important for the face velocities used in this study. However, particle rebound must be included in order to get good agreement with experimental data.;The fibrous media used in this study included ASHRAE, HEPA, and low efficiency ASHRAE grade media. Face velocity of air varied from 15 to 635 mm/sec for filtration experiments using mono-dispersed and poly-dispersed particles with diameters ranging from 0.05...
