Graphite reinforced composite materials are largely used in aerospace applications because of their unique properties. The present study focuses on the design and fabrication of a graphite reinforced structure element used in the backing structure of a large flat solar panel. An overview of the general structure is presented such that the design parameters can be selected. Design requirements are defined, followed by a description of the boundary conditions, and by the definition of the loading environment. A simplified model is then constructed. Several materials are considered based on their mechanical properties, and the most suitable material is chosen. Once the laminate configuration is defined, a preliminary stress analysis is performed to verify the design parameters. Finally the model is completely defined and a manufacturing outline is presented. Tooling and fabrication techniques are discussed, followed by final considerations. |
