Abstract/Summary:
A survey on mold powders used in the Canadian Steel Industry showed that the properties of the industrial powders were not well known. In the literature, the phenomena's during the melting of the powders are also not quite understood. Some tests exist but they are not usually used. Only the viscosity and the, melting temperature are known for each industrial powder, and the values depend on the type of the test used.; So the CSIRA agreed to support CIREP to initiate a study on the melting properties of mold powders. The study is aiming at characterizing the melting of powders, then to correlate in plant trials and laboratory tests, in order to understand how the evaluation of mold powders in laboratory could be linked with on-site observations.; Thereafter, an experimental method has been designed to evaluate the melting parameters on a laboratory scale, with melting conditions similar to the one in the mold.; Three powders were first tested in a slab caster mold to follow the evolution of the powders during melting. The liquid pool depth was evaluated with a "three wires method". Thickness profiles were obtained. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
