There are two kinds of carbon materials: one can form long range ordered structures under certain conditions (graphitizable carbon) and the other can only form short range ordered structures (non-graphitizable carbon). This thesis first deals with those materials that can form long range ordered structures by thermodynamic techniques. The following question can be answered by this thesis: given temperature and pressure and molecular weight distribution, what is the percentage and molecular weight distribution of mesophase? A general thermodynamic model which covers most of the thermodynamic effects has been constructed and a numerical algorithm has been implemented to solve the thermodynamic model. The second part of the thesis constructed a model to describe the difference between graphitizable and non-graphitizable carbons. |
