Abstract/Summary:
Mobile agents are autonomous programs that can move through a network, migrating from one host to another and interacting with other agents and resources on each host. The agents run in the places, which are dedicated system environments that host them. For the agent system to be useful, it requires a specific infrastructure that supports a naming system and enables agents to move transparently between places, regardless of when and where the machines connect to the network. In this thesis, I describe the design and implementation of an Agent Naming System (ANS), which provides all of these necessary facilities. To show that the ANS is useful, I have implemented an example of the ANS that supports various activities, such as assignment distributions and submissions.
