Abstract/Summary:
The effect of many different parameters on compressibility and machinability was studied. It was determined that the most important parameters for compressibility were the chemical composition and the size distribution of the powder. In all cases studied, when the size distributions were identical, the largest compressibility was obtained for the powders having the lowest amount of manganese oxidized. The amount of manganese oxidized is determined by the heat treatment applied to the powders. Even for high (total) manganese content powders, very low amounts of manganese oxidized were possible. However, when comparing powders with different (total) manganese contents but produced with the same heat treatments, the ones with the lowest manganese contents gave the lowest amount of manganese oxidized.;In the process used by Domfer, it was shown that the atmosphere has a greater impact than the temperature on the level of manganese oxidized.;Free machining powders containing manganese sulfide (MnS) were also studied. The reduction of different mill scales was studied. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
