| The dynamics of particulate air pollution, residence time of particles in the air and interaction with the local environment and surfaces present numerous challenges. Oak (Quercus) leaves were sampled on a weekly basis and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy individual particle analysis (SEM-IPA) to characterize particles by their physical characteristics and elemental composition over a growing season. Previous studies have led to the idea that mass loading increases over time, but the time resolution of such studies is not extensive. Meteorological events were monitored for relation to particle loadings and elemental type. This study is believed to be unique in its examination of leaves from a deciduous species as the surface for particle interception and retention. The results will further the ideas of urban forestry that trees can have importance beyond an aesthetic value. |
