Volatile organic compounds like Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and p-Xylene are persistent and toxic contaminants. This research aims to integrate an in-situ tool known as the Membrane Interface Probe (MIP) with novel detectors for subsurface characterization of contaminants. A methodology was developed to use a portable Gas Chromatograph instrumented with dual detectors, a Photo Ionization Detector (PID) and a Micro Ionization Detector (MAID) with the MIP. Laboratory calibration curves were developed using the GC-MIP system using aqueous samples and soil samples. Field demonstration tests were conducted to test the validity and efficiency of the integrated system. The results determined by the MIP-GC detectors were confirmed using standard EPA methods for analysis of VOCs in soil. |
