Abstract/Summary:
This study provides characterization and refinement of certain synthetic Rare Earth garnet structures. The garnets investigated include aluminum, gallium, and iron garnets with the Rare Earth metals: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu. All of these compounds have the general formula, A3B5O12, where A is a Rare Earth and B is Al, Ga or Fe. The characterization and refinement of the structures were accomplished by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Until now, patterns for many of these compounds were either, non-existent or of poor quality. This work is intended to represent a more comprehensive set of XRD data on the Rare Earth garnets, filling in gaps where other research has left off. By presenting new data for these compounds identification and purity can be determined. The data obtained from these patterns showed good correlation to similar patterns with the same structure types.
