Millimeter-wave observations of CO emission and near-infrared spectroscopy of a nearly complete sample of high-redshift, powerful radio galaxies (HzPRGs: ;CO observations and near-infrared spectroscopy of a newly identified sample of hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HyLIGs: ;The data presented in this thesis are consistent with the hypothesis that HzPRGs are predominantly powered by an obscured AGN. Contrary to earlier speculation, HzPRGs as a class do not appear to show evidence for strong thermal dust emission, nor are they extremely rich in star-forming gas; their rest-frame UV-to-radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) appear to be predominantly non-thermal emission.
