Abstract/Summary:
This research project applies the principles of collaborative management to the development of a coastal resources management plan for Olango Island, Philippines. Collaborative resources management is the process of planning and implementing management initiatives through the active participation of local stakeholders. The goal of the collaborative management planning process on Olango Island was to develop a management plan that reflects the needs and desires of the local community, while ensuring the effective conservation of coastal resources.;This document analyzes the collaborative management processes used to develop the coastal resources management plan on Olango Island. The analysis includes an evaluation of the legal and institutional framework governing coastal resources management, the management planning process, management planning outcomes, and social transformation. The collaborative management planning process resulted in a management plan that incorporates social, economic and ecological initiatives designed to benefit local stakeholders, while protecting the coastal resources in municipal waters. The management initiatives were successfully developed through the cooperation of representatives from government agencies, community groups, resource users, and technical specialists from the USAID-sponsored Coastal Resources Management Project.
