Abstract/Summary:
Agricultural risk includes hazardous weather events such as flooding. Within recent years, Tennessee has experience flooding in 2010 and drought in 2012. There are many risk management strategies available to either anticipate or receive compensation in the event such extreme weather occurs. This study uses data collected from small farm operators in Tennessee through a survey questionnaire. The objectives of this study are to assess the current risk management practices followed by Tennessee small farm operators and analyze Tennessee small farm operators' capacity to manage risks of increasing inclement weather. This study provides evidence that while risk management strategies are available, risk management education is necessary. In addition, this study shows that nearly one third of small farm operators in Tennessee were affected by the floods of 2010.
