Abstract/Summary:
In present day optical networks, to ensure survivability all the connections are given complete protection irrespective of their requirements (which, in most cases are less demanding), which leads to severe under utilization of networks and in some case race conditions due to conflict in protection requirements. Intelligent schemes need to be developed to take into account the survivability (availability or protection) requirements in terms of protection guarantees and restoration time of individual connections, while allocating backup resources. Services may be defined in terms of survivability guarantees based grades. One such service grading scheme known as Quality of Protection (QoP) is defined which gives the connections protection guarantees.; Three new QoP based schemes PQoP-PS, DQoP-BS and QDQoP-PS have been proposed which give the incoming connections their respective QoP guarantees. Studies show that these schemes enhance the network performance in terms of blocking probability significantly. Also a new term known as effective protection is introduced which computes the actual protection that a connection gets as opposed to the requested protection guarantees.
