Energy-Efficient QoT-Guaranteed Routing in Translucent Optical Networks

Optical technologies based on Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) in the backbone of the Internet are becoming the dominant technology. Previously, limited wavelength resources were the primary obstacle in optical networks. However, as networks improved in terms of service rate and link reach, energy consumption and Quality of Transmission (QoT) have replaced the prior issue of wavelength insufficiency. Therefore, in this study, we investigate energy-efficient QoT-guaranteed routing for static traffic in translucent optical networks. The proposed routing algorithm decreases the energy consumption in the network when the network is not heavily loaded, and there is sufficient number of optical-electrical-optical (OEO) converters, which regenerate the optical signals that have accumulated impairments during propagation. Also, it satisfies the QoT of the accepted requests while having a reasonable probability of blocking. The proposed algorithm reduces the energy consumption by considering power consumption as the cost of links in Dijkstra's algorithm. Afterwards, it allocates OEO convertors to combat the physical impairments of low quality connections and decreases the probability of blocking. Our algorithm ignores physical impairments in selecting the paths, and it only allocates OEO convertors in case it is really necessary. The results of the simulation of our algorithms are compared with two other routing algorithms to benchmark their performance.
