Caching techniques have been employed to overcome some of the problems posed by disconnection and limited bandwidth in mobile environments. Demand driven and prefetching techniques to maintain optimal caches in such environments had limited success. In this thesis work, we develop methods to maintain and enhance data availability to mobile client's caches through profiling. Profiling techniques determine which data item to be prefetched and cached depending on a user group and context. We have developed a prototype system depicting a crisis management situation. Results of implementation of the above technique in experimental mobile environments will be presented in this research work. Our results demonstrate that profile based caching can significantly enhance data availability in mobile and ubiquitous environments. |
