Abstract/Summary:
Channel estimation in wireless networks is needed to compensate for the channel-induced distortions of the electromagnetic signal transmitted in a multipath environment. This thesis presents a method for estimating the channel impulse response from the observed signal at the receiver using a prespecified training sequence. A set of constraints applied on the training sequence amplitudes provides the necessary and sufficient conditions for the generation of linear unbiased estimates of the channel impulse response. The channel estimator can be adapted to any channel length and its error performance can be predicted. Performance comparison of the proposed estimator against the least squared estimator as well as an application of the channel estimator in an indoor channel are demonstrated.
