Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores the topic of adult environmental education by identifying from a literature review the ambient key principles of adult environmental education and comparing these to the views of the people of the Republic of Seychelles---a nation of 115 islands within the Indian Ocean. The primary question that guided this study was: What are the environmental educational needs and opportunities for adults within the Seychelles?; The five key principles identified from the literature review were related to: (a) experiential environmental education, (b) immediacy of environmental education, (c) constructivism in environmental education, (d) community-based environmental education, and (e) integration for environmental education.; An integrated adult environmental education model is developed that has as its foundation the five principles identified from both the literature review and the participatory views of the Seychellois representatives. The unifying role of the integration of methodologies and the key role of tertiary education is stressed. The environmental education model is designed to allow and encourage progressive community involvement, and facilitate a variety of environmental project initiatives. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
