This paper will examine two separate arenas where the U.S. engaged with Korea in the 20th century. The first part will examine the history of U.S. government policy concerning Korea with emphasis on WWII and the Korean War. I will then direct the paper to an examination of Korean representation in U.S. films concerning WWII and the Korean War. I utilize Edward Said's Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism, and Christina Klein's Cold War Orientalism to de-construct factors that contribute to the meaning and understanding of Korea in the U.S. |
