Abstract/Summary:
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, the United States military instituted an embedded media program on a scale not seen for decades. This thesis professional project is intended to become a United States Army field manual covering the concept of embedding media during combat operations. Its purpose is to provide guidance to U.S. Army commanders and public affairs officers on media planning during combat operations and training.;It is designed to provide historical context of the embedded media concept, explain the professional and ethical guidelines for soldiers and journalists, show how the Army and the media can work together to best benefit the American people, and outline the risks and benefits of embedding, the preparation for hosting embedded media representatives, the logistical challenges, operational expectations, and the lessons learned from past embedding programs.
