Abstract/Summary:
Minimizing negative impacts associated with water rebound in decommissioned mines requires a quantitative, proactive assessment of the process. An innovative modeling approach has been developed to simulate mine water rebound hydrodynamics. This approach computes fully-coupled three-dimensional flow taking place in the fractured rock mass and one-dimensional flow occurring inside mine conduits. The approach has been tested against a documented case of mine water rebound: the Saizerais mine, located in northeastern France. The model adequately reproduces the temporal evolution of the hydraulic head inside the mine during and after rebound as well as the timing of mine overflow at surface. Overestimation of overflow discharges by the model suggest that the fractured rock units adjacent to the mine do not behave as equivalent porous media.
