Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the washback effects of the Spoken English Test (SET), a component of the College English Test (CET) battery, on the content of New College English, one of the most popular textbook series used for English teaching in Chinese colleges and universities. Based on Messick's ideas of consequential validity (1996), Hughes' washback framework (1993), and Bailey's basic model of washback (1996), two research questions were addressed. First, what is the relationship between the College English Teaching Syllabus, SET, and the textbook series under study? Second, how has SET influenced the textbook content? To answer the research questions, the College English Teaching Syllabus, the SET testing syllabus and sample exam paper, and the textbook series were analyzed and compared with the use of, a comparison guide, with an attempt to find out the matches and mismatches among them.
