Abstract/Summary:
Muslims have practiced the doctrine of Jihad, or holy war, since the seventh century. This concept is to be carried out in three forms. First is the jihad of the heart, where individuals overcome themselves. The second form is the tongue, or the obligation to share God's word with the world. The third aspect is the jihad of the hand or sword where believers are expected to physically defend their lands in the name of God. The history of other religions such as Judaism and a Western religion, Mormonism, demonstrate that although the term "Jihad" is not used by Jews or Mormons, the concept is common to other religions as well. The study makes use of primary and secondary resources pertaining to the history and doctrine of Islam, Judaism, and Mormonism. Results are presented in chapters on (1) definition and history of Islamic Jihad, (2) Jihad among the Jews, (3) Jihad and the Mormons, (4) conclusions.
