Abstract/Summary:
between trees is a manuscript about the natural and constructed landscape of the Bay Area, especially Alameda County and the surrounding forests, lakes, cities, and naval bases. It is also about the poet's ability (or inability) to articulate his or her surroundings and experience through language, and the necessary tension of attempting to describe one's subjective experience of place through a means of communication that necessarily fails. As the manuscript progresses, images and landscapes become fragmented and degraded, moving from a natural landscape infused with the poet's subjective experience of the places being discussed to the barrenness and waste of a decommissioned naval base.
