Abstract/Summary:
This work is a heavily edited English-language translation of the 1979 Italian best-seller, La Grande Guerra degli Italiani, by Antonio Gibelli. The original book examines the social, economic, and political ramifications of World War I on the Italian people. Its central thesis being that during World War I the Italian nation made huge strides toward social and economic unification following its political unification during the 19 th Century Risorgimento. The English translation includes additional historical material---both in the Forward and throughout the text---which provides the context for a better understanding of the events of that period, especially for readers who are not Italian. The book comprises a wealth of personal letters and diary entries cited from Italian state archives which are not available elsewhere in English. It fills the gap in the English-language historiography between military accounts of the Italo-Austrian Front and the social histories of that period.
