Abstract/Summary:
Given the growing importance of proteomics in life sciences, it is little wonder that proteomics is also becoming integral to many pharmaceutical research projects. This thesis is about the development and application of new proteomics tools towards drug discovery and development. In Chapter 2, a web-based gel management system, called Gelscape is described. Gelscape facilitates analysis and archiving of 1D and 2D protein gels using a variety of web tools and web scripts. In addition to Gelscape, another open access web-tool called DrugBank for proteomic based drug discovery is described in Chapter 3. DrugBank is a web-enabled database that combines drug information with drug target information to allow users the possibility of linking small molecule data with protein sequence/structure data. In Chapter 4, we demonstrate how experimental methods in proteomics can be integrated with computational tools to characterize a protein (from Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum Deltah) with unknown function and structure.
