Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to identify barriers/roadblocks that prevent proper self-care in type 2 diabetic patients. The information was gathered using a questionnaire given to 20 diabetic patients in a teaching hospital in western New York. The researcher constructed a questionnaire to ascertain barriers to diabetes self-management, exercise, and diet. By analyzing the responses of the participants, trends were found related to difficulty attaining proper self-care, exercise, and diet. The study found that the following were barriers to care: forgetting to take medication as prescribed, not making time in the schedule for exercise, lack of education on a diabetic diet, and how to utilize that knowledge while eating out at a restaurant or getting take-out food.
