Abstract/Summary:
Technology in the field of healthcare is changing rapidly and becoming difficult to ignore requiring necessary changes. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are a technology which will soon be required in every physician practice setting. Small physician practices do not have the same available resources as larger organizations resulting in difficulty choosing the most appropriate system. Seemingly preplanning is neglected which is necessary to experience a successful EHR implementation. The preplanning effort includes project management principles and full consideration of change management. For change management to be successful there are three areas which require equal consideration: technology, processes, and people. Small physician practices require support to transition through the preplanning, project management, and change management phases necessary for a successful EHR implementation. To assist practices during this transition a guidebook and website resources have been created and may be used with the assistance of an outside resource, such as a consultant.
