Abstract/Summary:
This exploratory quantitative research study focused on a house wide hospital Registered Nurse float pool and its impact on nurse job satisfaction. Rosabeth Moss Kanter's structural theory of organizational empowerment was used as the theoretical framework. Research showed RNs floating to units on which they have not been trained is a great source of stress and leads to decreased job satisfaction. However, the impact of an RN float pool on nurse job satisfaction has not been studied. This study was conducted at a 511 bed urban hospital in the midwestern United States. All RNs were sent a computer-based questionnaire. Significant findings from a sample of 314 RNs for this study included that 44% of RNs were dissatisfied or extremely dissatisfied with their jobs when floated, and 86% of participants felt the house wide RN float pool has a positive impact on their job satisfaction. A house wide RN float pool has the potential to have a positive impact on one's job satisfaction as a nurse.
