Abstract/Summary:
Equine reproduction technologies in the 21st century are far superior to those in the past. Ultrasound continues to advance the methods of detecting estrus and ovulation, but its practice has led to a decline in supplemental information for diagnosis. Obtaining ultrasound equipment becoming trained is quite expensive, and often not an option for small breeding practices. Therefore, other practical, cost effective, valid techniques for estrus detection are needed. The objectives of the present study were to 1) develop a valid criterion-related performance test instrument to evaluate a mare's breed-ability and subsequent pregnancy via assessing the cervical and vaginal characteristics of a mare's reproductive tract, and 2) produce a photographic visual guide to accompany the instrument. The study's results suggest strong indications of the instrument being a valid method. Recommendation for further research could test the instrument independently on a larger body of equines to determine practicality in the field.
