Encapsulated nanoparticles in cancer theranostics

Abstract/Summary:
Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) using green products were encapsulated with anti-cancer (SN-38) drug and cordyceps extract. Three series of NPs were produced using various reducing agents, dispersing agent to enhance surface reactivity, and biocompatibility. The NPs were characterized using the state-of-the-art instrumentations to obtain in-depth understanding of the morphology, crystalline structure and elemental composition. These analyses included ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, atomic force and scanning/transmission electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The surface kinetic energy was evaluated using Zetapotential to determine the colloid's stability. The system was compared to other systems, which have been used as bactericidal agents in Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, in which 100% inhibition within 4 hours at 2.5 ppm was achieved. The toxicity of the NPs were tested on various biological cells, including retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, Chinese hamster ovarian (CHO) cancer cells and compared to NIH/3T3 cells.
