Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to design and analyze an aircraft's canopy to determine if the mounting of a canopy can resist the impact of a 4-pound bird at 350 knots. In addition, the canopy's supporting shaft is also analyzed to determine if the impact will have an effect on it. This is accomplished through the use of IDEAS, a Computer Aided Design (CAD) software platform. Using IDEAS, the canopy's surface is generated and parts such as shaft, frame, latches, etcetera are created and attached to the canopy. This study explores the in-depth function of NURBS, a versatile modeling primitive, as well as utilizes the Finite Element Method approach to determine the deflection and to show the magnitude and location of stresses.
