Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research was to determine the contents of vitamin C, folic acid and the phytochemicals flavonoids in the chironja fruit grafted on four different rootstocks. A comparative analysis was conducted within the different rootstocks to determine if significant differences exist among all and between oranges (Citrus sinensis) and grapefuits (Citrus paradisi). Folates and flavonoids were determined with an HPLC method and vitamin C was detected by the Tillmans Method. Flavonoids determination revealed that naringenin, present in grapefruits, did not appear in chironja. Collected data revealed significant differences within the rootstocks evaluated for vitamin C contents. The estimated average for vitamin C in chironjas revealed 15% below oranges and 13% above grapefruits. Different limitations could not make possible quantification for folates in chironja. The findings of this study revealed part of the nutritional value of chironja which could be an important factor for marketing.
