Abstract/Summary:
New class of bimetallic phosphorous oxide materials containing Ag, Cu, or V metal centers has been studied as cathode materials in the next generation lithium based batteries. Deliberate selection of the novel cathode materials is based upon the expectation to obtain high energy capacity from multiple electron reduction within the formula unit and intrinsic stability from phosphate group in the structure. Synthesis of the candidate materials was reported previously whereas any studies on their electrochemistry have not been conducted. Herein the materials of interest are prepared by both previously reported and novel synthesis methods and characterized to elucidate their chemical and physical properties. Detailed electrochemical characteristics of the materials are further explored for the first time. The novel cathode materials demonstrate a number of excellent electrochemical performances. Advantageous characteristic features of each material show promise as the cathode in the next generation lithium battery systems targeted for primary biomedical battery applications such as implantable cardioverter defibrillator and possible secondary battery applications.
