It is a proven fact that road pavement is damaged when exposed to truck overload. This is a common problem on Puerto Rican Highways. In January of 2004 the commonwealth government approved the first official Weight and Dimension Regulation. The Department of Transportation and Public Works also developed the first Permanent Truck Weight Station in Salinas, Puerto Rico. The objectives of this project are to study the operation of the first Permanent Truck Weight Station in Puerto Rico, to measure compliance with the Regulation, and to analyze the first truck weight data collected at the Salinas Truck Weight Station. A comparison was also made between data collected before and after the Weight and Dimension Regulation's were approved. The study concludes that 12.9% of all trucks passing through the station violate some of the weight regulations, 0.2% of them suppressing the total weight allowed. It was also found that more than 55% of the trucks using the highway did not enter the weight station as stipulated by law.
