Abstract/Summary:
The challenge of this thesis is to incorporate new and old technologies within a design strategy, to put forward a new vision of urban design and architecture in a post-industrial society. It examines the relationships between inhabitants and utilities within a community at three scales: the community, the block and the residence.;Utilities are brought to the forefront of the design in an attempt to create an awareness, a sense of ownership, and a sense of responsibility among the residents of the community. The testing grounds for this thesis is the East Village neighbourhood in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.;The idea that waste = food (the waste from one process becomes the food for another) is prevalent within the design strategy of the waste management systems and energy systems. This helps close the loop of energy so that the inhabitation of cities conforms to a cyclical process of consumption.
