Abstract/Summary:
Due to rising fuel costs, geopolitical unrest and increasing concern about global climate change, the need to explore the alternative energy sources to reduce environmental footprint and to enhance energy security is significant. Wind power is one of the widely used and fastest growing renewable energy. However, integration of wind energy into the electrical grid presents serious challenges to policy makers. Advanced electricity storage technologies can meet the challenges in several ways if the locations are chosen wisely. In this thesis, using simple charging and discharging dynamics of energy storage in an optimal power flow model, the siting issues of storage capacity into the electricity grid are analyzed. In addition, the benefits of storage in energy as well as ancillary markets and savings related to generation costs are studied.
