Abstract/Summary:
An Anisotropic Mesoscopic Traffic Simulation (AMTS) model, which is oriented towards improving the mesoscopic modeling paradigms proposed by Jayakrishnon, Mahmassani, and Hu (1994), and Ben-Akiva et al. (1998), has been proposed in this thesis. The framework and formulation of the AMTS model has been established. Compared with the incompetence of the existing models, the AMTS model is capable of naturally capturing macroscopic traffic dynamics, which has been demonstrated through both theoretical and numerical approaches in this thesis. In addition, for the purpose of enabling the AMTS model to be applied in practice, reasonable methods and procedures to calibrate the parameters in the model have been set up and tested based on the data from a microscopic traffic simulation model.
