Abstract/Summary:
Flows over cavities are found in many engineering applications such as internal weapon bay, in-flight refueling ports, pressure vents in the space shuttle's cargo bay, and many others. Therefore understanding the flow characteristics under different freestream conditions and cavity dimensions is very important. In this study, a supersonic turbulent flow over an open cavity is analyzed. The Favre-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using a (k - &egr;) turbulence closure are used. Results show the importance of the cavity aspect ratio and the freestream Mach number. It is found that depending on the cavity aspect ratio, the flow is either an open cavity flow, a close cavity flow or a transitional cavity flow. This agrees with the result published in the literature. Increasing the Mach number, from 1.5 to 3, results in higher pressure fluctuations in the cavity.
