Abstract/Summary:
This thesis describes the application of the Partially Averaged Navier Stokes (PANS) method to the unsteady flow around two tandem cylinder arrangements. Flow around tandem cylinders has been studied extensively using the well-known Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (URANS) with the two equation turbulence models (k-epsilon) or (k-o). The goal of this research is to show the ability of PANS to resolve the unsteady turbulent flow between two cylinders and in the wake of the rear cylinder. The cases studied are for cylinder spacing to diameter ratios of 1.435 and 3.7. The flow is characterized by a Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter of 0.166 million and a Mach number of 0.166. Results show that for an optimal control parameter fk, PANS (k-o) results are in better agreement with experimental data than PANS ( k-epsilon) for the pressure coefficient, Cp, and the near wall velocity profiles. In general, PANS showed a dramatic improvement of the shedding in the wake of the cylinders and in resolving the turbulent kinetic energy.
