Abstract/Summary:
Rotating Equipment is susceptible to torsional vibrations whenever the rotational speed of the rotating equipment matches one of the torsional natural frequencies. In rotating equipment where the rotational speed is a constant, and the rotational speed matches one of the torsional natural frequencies, it is easy to control the torsional vibration of shafts, but in applications where the rotational speed is no longer a constant and varies widely; there is a need for a wide range vibration reduction device.;In this thesis, an adaptive torsional tuned vibration absorber (ATTVA) device is described in which its natural frequency can be easily tuned to the rotational speed of the rotating shaft. The electromagnetic ATTVA is added to rotating equipment. The rotating equipment and the electromagnetic ATTVA are modeled using bond graph modeling technique. Analysis results indicate that the torsional vibration of rotating equipment can be easily controlled using this newly developed electromagnetic ATTVA.;The ATTVA was designed, fabricated and tested on a rotating machinery test setup in the laboratory. The results revealed good matching between the mathematical model and the experimental data. Experiments were performed using different configurations of the ATTVA, and the results attained showed a clear change in the dynamic behavior of the system as the frequencies have shifted marginally during the experiments.
