Abstract/Summary:
To maintain the competitive edge in the electronics manufacturing and packaging industry, it is necessary to have accurate yield and reliability prediction models to improve profitability and to satisfy customer requirements. The requirements of the Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) providers for the automotive sectors are even more stringent due to the exposure of the parts to harsh environments. In order to predict failures, a systematic approach has to be followed to identify the root cause(s) for each failure. By understanding the causes for failure and by taking appropriate corrective measures, the yield can be improved. The primary objective of this research endeavor is to identify the root causes for the failures that occur in a pressure sensor assembly line at an EMS facility which caters to the automotive sector.;Launching a new technology is by itself a challenge. Once it passes the design validation and verification phase, the manufacturing process needs to be optimized for high yield to meet and surpass the customer's requirements. It becomes necessary to identify and prioritize the major yield loss contributors. Identifying the root causes and allocating resources to improve yield is not trivial. The return on investments for resource allocation will decrease as the principal root cause for the failures are effectively addressed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
