Abstract/Summary:
This work proposes a semi-analytical method to calculate the dynamical response of symmetric and asymetric rectangular liquid containing structures in two dimensional space. The proposed method is based on the substructure method and can take account of the flexibility of each wall independantly, the compressibility of the liquid, a radiation condition at the tank bottom, the sloshing of the liquid surface and allows to take account of a more general condition of floating masses such as ice-blocks. The method uses the finite element technique to compute the natural modes of the dry structure and deals with the fluid potential by solving the boundary value problem. The method is limited to small changes, and employs Airy linear theory for modeling the sloshing problem. The proposed technique has been programmed and validated using the finite element method for several numerical examples. It provided an opportunity to highlight the amplifying effect of an ice cover on the response of the fluid and the structure.
