Abstract/Summary:
The aim of the present study is to analyze the literature on electroplating of steel wires, to identify all reported defect types, their characteristics, associated features and causes. From the study, it is intended to provide a guide that will help determine the most probable causes) for defects encountered on plated steel wire made from steel wire rod surfaces produced by North Star Steel Texas. The guide will suggest appropriate corrective actions for the eventual improvement of electroplated wires made from wire rods of North Star Steel Texas.; Steel wire is one of the most important and versatile products of the steel industry as a basic form for further fabrication. The physical properties and composition of the basic steel metal in general exert a major influence on both the quality and platability of the part to be electroplated. Considerable quantities of steel wire are given some kind of metallic coating for either protective or decorative purposes. Electroplating is a common long-standing industrial technique for the mass production of functional coatings in industry.; Any electroplating operation process may experience problems time to time. The difficulty may directly involve the plating bath or defects on steel to be plated or may be caused by the pre- or post-treatment stages, racking, and electrical problems. This study focuses on the defect developed during wire rod rolling and wire drawing processes prior to electroplating.
