Abstract/Summary:
This thesis presents possible alternatives to the reuse of abandoned industrial sites in Puerto Rico. These sites can contain either perceived or real contamination and are known as brownfields.;The purpose of the present study was to promote new ideas for development in order to take advantage of some of these previously impacted sites, instead of initiating new developments within intact green lands. This thesis primarily focuses on the sugar mill landscapes, as Puerto Rican local communities, the islands culture, and certain government agencies all have a vested interest in these types of brownfields, brownfields which also contain historical monuments. This investigation presents strategies for the implementation of new programs which plan to diminish contamination, and presents evidence showing the importance of this industry within the Puerto Rican economy as well as the effects of the abandonment of industrial sites throughout the island.
