Abstract/Summary:
At a municipal wastewater treatment many odorous compounds are generated by biological metabolism under anaerobic conditions. Such odorous compounds may also exist in industrial discharges. The odor producing compounds are hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan, methyl disulfide, dimethyl disulfide, carbonyl sulfide (COS) and other reduced sulfides. This research was carried out to determine the removal efficiency of carbonyl sulfide using biofilter technology. The research objectives were achieved by conducting bench scale laboratory experiments.; The experimental test set up consisted of transparent PVC columns, Teflon flow meters, carbonyl sulfide sensor, pollutant gas (carbonyl sulfide) cylinder, air source, pH meter, humidity stick, humidification chamber, Tygon tubing, one side arm flask, and some fittings and sampling port. Three different media were used as biofilter media: compost, hard wood chips and mixture of compost and hard wood chips. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
