Abstract/Summary:
The synthesis and characterization of forty-four organosilicon polymers from sheet silicates, a scroll silicate and tube silicates are described. The sheet silicates used were apophyllite (KCa4Si8O 20(F,OH)·8H2O), magadiite (Na2Si14 O29·7H2O; Hoechst SKS-2) and kenyaite (Na 2Si22O45·9H2O; Hoechst SKS-1), the scroll silicate was chrysotile (Mg3(OH)4Si 2O5), and the tube silicates were litidionite (NaKCUSi 4O10) and K2CUSi4O10. Thirty-six of these polymers were synthesized by silylation of the silicates. The silylation reagents used were monochlorosilanes, dichlorosilanes and dimethoxysilanes. Seventeen of the polymers were synthesized by silylation using mixtures of chlorosilanes. These had multiple pendent groups. The remaining eight polymers were synthesized by reactions which elaborated pendent groups of sheet, scroll and tube organosilicon polymers. The elaboration reactions were either a hydrosilylation reaction of an alkene pendent group by a silane, or a hydrosilylation reaction of an alkene by a hydrido pendent group.; Thirty-eight of these forty-four polymers form exfoliated gels in non-polar solvents (a representative polymer which forms such gels is A--ODM2 -CM2, [((n-C18H37)(CH 3)2SiO)x((NCC3H6)(CH 3)2SiO)y(OH)1-x-ySiO1.5] n). These gels form coatings. In these coatings the sheets have a high degree of order.; The polymers also form composites with siloxane matrices. In some of these composites the sheets are exfoliated and are chemically bound to the matrix. Some of these sheet polymer filled composites show superior reinforcement when compared to composites filled with similar loadings of fumed or colloidal silica.
